馬克·歐布萊恩（約翰·浩克斯 John Hawkes 飾）曾在幼年時期患上過小兒麻痹癥。疾病的后遺癥不僅讓他再也沒有站起來過，并且還讓他飽受呼吸困難的折磨。雖然已過而立之年的他早已成為一名成功的詩人兼記者，但作為一個男人，卻從未嘗試過性的滋味。在向牧師朋友多次尋求指引 后，他毅然決定通過雇傭?qū)I(yè)性從業(yè)者來幫助自己完成這個愿望。于是謝爾（海倫·亨特 Helen Hunt 飾）出現(xiàn)在了馬克的生活里。然而對于馬克這樣特殊的情況，謝爾一開始也覺得無所適從。但是漸漸地，兩人不僅從醫(yī)患關(guān)系變?yōu)榕笥?，謝爾同時也給予了馬克追求幸福和愛的勇氣，讓馬克邁出了追尋愛的第一步。
